Training your Cobberdog puppy can be a fun exciting challenge, and if done properly, a rewarding accomplishment. Training is a learned skill, just as most other life skills, requires understanding specific and basic knowledge.
Cobberdog puppies range from super intelligent, easily distracted to attentive, eager to please.
In the short clip above Lori is working with Uppa, a 14 week old male Cobberdog puppy. At the time of the recording Uppa has been in the training program at Arrowhead for 4 weeks. Uppa rates high in intelligence, and is easily distracted. These small nuances in the puppies temperament require the trainer to be in tune and adaptive to the puppies training needs. If the puppy is given a motion and verbal command, and complies immediately, although briefly, the trainer needs to be ready with the reward. Notice at 1.15 when Lori asks Uppa to “leave it” (a small treat intentionally dropped on the floor in front of the puppy) as soon as Uppa’s attention reverts from the dropped morsel to Lori’s face, she treats him with the other hand. This immediate reward for obedience builds over time and longer pauses between the action and reward can be observed. This will eventually allow the trainer to ask for more mentally demanding acts from the puppy.
